Ernie’s original “rescuer” contacted us when his care proved to be beyond her means. Ernie had gained some of the weight he needed from his original starvation, but he was still severely underweight when he arrived at RVR in March 2025.

His skin was covered in terrible sores, possibly an allergic reaction to insect bites. His hooves were still cracked, overgrown, and full of thrush.  His bloodwork showed severe anemia and appears to be anhydrosis (non-sweater) not uncommon with starvation cases.

We’re currently tackling his medical issues and Ernie has proven to be a fighter with a strong will to live. Throughout his painful and uncomfortable medical conditions, Ernie has maintained a sweet and friendly disposition and we know he will make a new owner very happy some day.

Ernie needs an intermediate-experienced owner and one willing to handle his ongoing skin conditions as needed. Ernie is a pasture pal and bonds easily, so he needs a pasture mate who will welcome a velcro-friend! Ernie is bonded to Indy and preference will be made for a new owner who’s willing to give the pair a home.
