Pasture Pals – for Adoption or Sponsorship

Once our rescues are rehabilitated, they are evaluated for soundness for riding. Pasture Pals are those who aren’t suitable for riding, but who make wonderful companions for other horses (and humans).

Sometimes our Pasture Pals are still in need of a sponsor to help defray the costs to maintain their care until an adoptive owner is found, or longer term for permanent residents.

Jitters

  • Foaled: 2016
  • Sex: Mare
  • Breed: Thoroughbred (OTTB)
  • Color: Bay
  • HH: 16.2
  • Disciplines: Light riding only. With conditions.
  • Status: Not available. Sponsored to Adopt!
Jitters arrived at RVR in January of 2023. She had surgery to remove chips from both of her front knees in January of 2023 and has now completed her rehabilitation.
She is a super sweet beauty and is available for adoption or sponsor. She would be a wonderful addition to any home. She attaches to people and gets along well with other equines easily. She’s loving, curious, and playful. She enjoys attention, being brushed and groomed, and loves her mani-pedis with the farrier. Do you have a spot in your barn and heart for this sweet girl?
Based on her medical history, she will be considered for light trail riding, for the right owner.

Zephyr

  • Foaled: 2011
  • Sex: Gelding
  • Breed: Thoroughbred (OTTB)
  • Color: Bay
  • HH:
  • Disciplines: Not cleared for riding
  • Status: Not available. Sponsored to Adopt!

Handsome Zephyr is super sweet and extremely smart, with lots of personality. He’s well-mannered, trusting, and easy to be around. He will easily attach to most horses and he’s great for the farrier and grooming.  Zephyr needs a patient owner who’s willing to spend time working with him to bring Zephyr to his full potential. He has recovered from his racing injuries and is now awaiting a loving forever home where he can run around the pasture with a companion or a herd. Would Zephyr be a good fit for you?

Horses in Rehab

When our horses arrive, they’re given a complete medical examination to determine their rehabilitation and treatment plan. Although we are a 100% volunteer organization, the rescues currently undergoing rehabilitation have significant expenses. Medical, farrier, and dental services are all provided at a reasonable cost, but it all adds up.

We are always looking for financial sponsors to help cover some of the costs for our horses in rehab.

Ernie

  • Name: Ernie
  • Foaled:
  • Sex: Gelding
  • Breed: Tennessee Walker
  • Color: Dark Bay
  • HH:
  • Rescue Status: Currently being rehabilitated.

Ernie’s original “rescuer” contacted us when his care proved to be beyond her means. Ernie had gained some of the weight he needed from his original starvation, but he was still severely underweight when he arrived at RVR in March 2025. His skin was covered in terrible sores, possibly an allergic reaction to insect bites. His hooves were still cracked, overgrown, and full of thrush.  His bloodwork showed severe anemia and appears to be anhydrosis (non-sweater) not uncommon with starvation cases.  We’re currently tackling his medical issues and Ernie has proven to be a fighter with a strong will to live. Throughout his painful and uncomfortable medical conditions, Ernie has maintained a sweet and friendly disposition and we know he will make a new owner very happy some day.

Indy

  • Name: Indiana Jones (Indy)
  • Foaled: 1995
  • Sex: Gelding
  • Breed: Tennessee Walker
  • Color: Dark Bay
  • HH:
  • Rescue Status: Currently being rehabilitated. Potential adoptive candidates are being considered.

Indy came to RVR in September 2024 after we stepped in to help care for him on his prior owner’s property for almost two weeks until we could move him. His prior owner had rescued Indy from a bad situation, but later decided to rehome him. Based on his very thin condition and hooves that were cut too short and at the wrong angle by the prior farrier, we knew Indy needed a safe place to get back to health before finding his forever home. Based on his prior trauma and the fact that he was without equine companionship for quite a while, Indy took a while to open up to equine friends, but he is coming out of his shell.  He has been ridden in the past, but with his age and body condition, it’s uncertain whether he’ll be able to be ridden again. In any case, he’s a sweet boy whose personality is starting to shine, and he will make a future owner very happy.

Zoe

  • Name: Zoe Mae
  • Foaled: Approx 2020
  • Sex: Mare
  • Breed: Mini
  • Color: Chestnut
  • HH:
  • Rescue Status: Currently being rehabilitated. Potential adoptive candidates are being considered.

Petite Zoe is like an adorable, fluffy, stuffed animal.  She was rescued as part of a trio of minis and Zoe is the youngest and smallest of the three. She’s a spunky, high-energy bay mare who will also relax if given affection. She’s the love bug of the trio and typically goes with the flow, but we are working with her on her manners and she has come a long way in a short time. She’s comfortable with her place in the middle of the herd. Once under halter, she stands politely. As Zoe continues to decompress to life at the rescue, her affectionate personality has started to emerge. She will be a wonderful addition to a lucky family. Zoe and Rosie are best buddies and will not be separated.

Rosie

  • Name: Rosie Lynn
  • Foaled: Approx 2017
  • Sex: Mare
  • Breed: Mini
  • Color: Grey – varies!
  • HH:
  • Rescue Status: Currently being rehabilitated. Potential adoptive candidates are being considered.
Rosie is about 8 years old, is the largest of the mini trio, and has the most weight to gain. She was rated with a body score of 2.0. Her coat disguises her protruding spine and hips. She’s still decompressing, but she’s already making progress! With time, attention, and a soft hand, we can see Rosie becoming a real sweetheart. Currently, she’s very shy and scared and is uncomfortable being touched or brushed. She resists having a halter put on, but is fine once it’s on.
Despite her hardships, Rosie is kind and wants to be included! She’s very bonded to Zoe, but keeps a close eye on Spike as well. We’re working on halter training and short daily walks and see this beautiful girl learning to trust with the extra TLC. She definitely needs a patient, understanding owner with a soft hand. Rosie was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, possibly from birth. She compensates for it as she walks but doesn’t appear to be in pain.

Zoe and Rosie are best buddies and will not be separated.

Spike

  • Name: Spike Turner
  • Foaled: Approx 2007
  • Sex: Gelding
  • Breed: Mini
  • Color: Light Chestnut
  • HH:
  • Rescue Status: Currently being rehabilitated. Potential adoptive candidates are being considered.
Spike is the oldest and the alpha of the mini trio. He’s approximately 18 years old and used to be a birthday party pony, so he’s been exposed to a lot of children, handling, and attention. With that, he’s friendly and gets along well with people and animals. He loves to be groomed and going on short walks. In July 2018, Spike had an injury that was diagnosed as upper fixation of the patella, also known as locking stifle. The treatment options were euthanasia or surgery, and thankfully, surgery was performed. He now limps and x-ray showed mild degeneration of his right hind stifle that he has compensated for in his gait. Spike arrived with body score of 2.0 that was being hidden underneath a heavy coat. He’s gaining weight, but he’s not at his goal yet. We are accepting adoption applicants, but Spike’s will not be finalized until his rehab is complete. We are hopeful that the trio will be adopted together, but realize that’s a lot to ask. As such, Spike is available as part of the mini trio or by himself. He would do well with or without Zoe and Rosie.

Stormy

  • Name: Stormy
  • Foaled:
  • Sex: Gelding
  • Breed: Mini Donkey
  • Color:
  • HH:
  • Rescue Status: Currently being rehabilitated. Not available for adoption.

Stormy arrived at RVR in August 2024. His owner was unable to care for him and was hoping we would help rehome him. We knew we needed to help him when we saw his summer sores and an extreme deformity of his sheath – which was later determined to be ‘summer sores gone wild’. Stormy is currently undergoing treatment for his summer sores and was also found to be metabolic, which we are hoping to be able to reverse with proper diet and reducing his excess weight. Once Stormy is rehabilitated and ready for his forever home, he will make a wonderful addition to any family.

Sound Horses – for Adoption or Sponsorship

Rehabilitated horses who are sound for riding will be matched with an adoptive owner depending on the type of riding the owner plans to do.

Sometimes our sound horses are still in need of a sponsor to help defray the costs to maintain their care until an adoptive owner is found, or longer term for permanent residents.

Currently we do not have any sound horses available for adoption. You can contact us through the website or Messenger to discuss.
