Human Equine Rehabilitation Operation

The Healing Power of Horses:

RVR Horse Rescue has long been a place of healing. Hundreds of horses have come through the gates to recover from abuse, neglect, and injury. But over the years, these horses have returned the favor and helped many volunteers recuperate from trauma, illness, and addiction. This reciprocation is documented in the book “A Healing Haven” by Shirley Alarie.

RVR Horse Rescue volunteers wanted to extend this healing to our veteran community as a way of expressing our gratitude for your service. This has led us to create the program H.E.R.O., which stands for Human Equine Rehabilitation Operation.

Our Partnership with Veterans:

RVR Horse Rescue is proud to partner with Mentors for Hillsborough County Veterans, Inc and the Veterans Treatment Court in offering HERO, an opportunity for veterans and horses to heal together.

Veterans assigned community service hours through the Veterans Treatment Court will come to the ranch and work side by side with RVR volunteers to rehabilitate abused and neglected horses. Hands-on horse care and enrichment will be part of the community service as a means for veterans to heal as well.

No Horse Experience? No problem!

Other veterans are welcome to join the HERO program as participants or as volunteer facilitators.

No equine experience is necessary to participate in this program; RVR volunteers will teach you what you need to know. Other non-horse-related skills are also needed!

If you are interested in HERO, Contact Us, and a volunteer will get in touch with you.
